Mythological Studies Programs

There are very few PhD programs in mythology. The doctoral program I designed at the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara can be completed by attending three day retreats - once a month. Students fly in from throughout the west. The Union Institute in Cincinnati has a distance program that allows you to design your own content. It can be done from most parts of the country. Jean Houston and Clarissa Pinkola Estes took their doctorates there. The California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco has a program that has strengths in Eastern Traditions and Women's initiations. Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts offers a doctorate that can include mythic symbolism and expressive arts therapy.

Mainstream programs that would have less archetypal material include UCLA, The Graduate Theological Union at Berkeley (associated with Univ. of Calif.) The Union Theological Seminary in NYC (associated with Columbia Univ.), Indiana University (Folklore Dept.).

Religious Studies Departments allow a focus in mythology. Top programs are at the University of California - Santa Barbara, Duke University, University of Chicago, Yale University, and Claremont Graduate University near Los Angeles.

Of Canadian universities, the McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario has a program in the English department that draws heavily on the work of Northrop Frye, one of the great mythic theorists of our time. Memorial University of St. John's, Newfoundland has a master's level course in mythology and folklore.
