Appreciating my spouse.
Tan graduated from our alma mater, the University of Dallas, and knows the difference between evidence (all of which makes ridiculous the trope that there is some link between homosexual marriage and the legalization of other "marriages" which would result in incest or pedophilia) and expediency, whether toward re-election or going along to get along in his caucus. Politicians live in an unreal world of addiction to ideology and deal-making. If the people who know them don't speak to them directly, call them back to the world beyond the Capitol, politicians lose track of what they know to be true beneath and beyond their own perceived interests. Go tell him.

Ugh. 63 Texas legislators have signed an amicus brief with the US 5th Circuit Court of Appeals stating that legalizing same-sex marriage will lead to the legalization of incest and pedophilia. One of the names on the list is University of Dallas alumnus Tan Parker. I feel embarrassed for Tan, and for the University. Tan, object on religious grounds if your principles demand it. Object on the basis of "it just makes me uncomfortable" if you must. But be forthright about it. Signing this brief belies your intelligence and makes you look like a puppet.

Susan Willm and Heather Statser Rogers like this.

Rufel Ramos Unfortunately, I'm not that surprised about Tan Parker. He kinda was that sort of guy back at UD.

David Fontenot Don't underestimate the death grip hold that many churches have on the way people vote. Some of my cousins attended high school in Kentucky where dance classes were illegal due to the pressure from the Southern Baptist community. Don't forget that -- despite Pope Francis' call for greater tolerance, that the Catholic Church also has its fingers all over this brief (no pun intended).

Lisa Strykowski WilliamsCraig I'm not surprised, just saddened. I have a cousin who is a devout Catholic, a Notre Dame alum, and a research scientist who works with neural cell development. He works very hard to be faithful both to God and to doing good and useful science. He works with cell development precisely because he believes in the sanctity and value of human life and wants to contribute to finding causes and cures for disease. But that kind of life requires courage and effort.

David Fontenot I spend a lot of time and effort debunking the "religion is the enemy of science/progress" meme that has become so prevalent in the circles I frequent. But this kind of thing makes my task that much more difficult.

Lisa Strykowski WilliamsCraig @David, I don't mean to imply that it is. But my cousin's institute does work with stem cells. His bishop has been out to the facility to learn about their methodologies, their objectives and their sources.
