Roundtable+Globalization and Sourcing+Notes

What , if any, definitions do we need to be able to proceed? What is Ethical? Moral?

Doesn't this conversation take place in the realm of Individual Freedom + Social Context? These will justify much.

It seems there has been a serious loss of empathy relative to loss of exposure to Nature.

Something about The System seems to have gone so far that it has become criminal.

How to account for the asymetry in economic realities? Being clear about what people actually "need" seems problematic.

How does "valuing" work when discussing "resources"? Price, demand, and labor all figure in.

"What The Market will bear," especially combined with Nature and The System, seems to suggest an interaction of powerful metaphorical figures, contemporary gods, psychologically speaking, that are more powerful than can be redirected in a straightforward way because of the interaction of intangibles at the "soul" level.

Important questions that need responses in order to deal responsibly with Globalization & Sourcing:

  1. Provenance - Where does it come from?
  2. Chain of Custody - How did it get to me?
  3. Ripples - What are the ramifications of the extraction?
  4. Destination - Where did it go in the end? Landfill? Recycling?
  5. Mythologies - what social forces/beliefs impact the above?
  6. Impact - How does cost get evaluated? Is this cost from beginning to end or for only part of the cycle?

What about the weight placed on novelty and the production cycle that is driven thereby?

What "intangibles" are involved (a brainstorm to get metaphors/ideas and themes out in the open) and need to be included:

human connection

spirit

relationship

emotion/feeling

love

nurture

community

service

psychology

projection/energy

felt sense

How do mechanization, comodification, depersonalization, and similar syndromes demand and accounting having to do with "emotional provenance"? What did it feel like and what intangible but sensible realities were involved in the extraction and delivery of Product X?

Did the "emotional provenance" of the process diminish "soul" (the process of making meaning by deepening experience) or serve life by valuing soul?

Where is soul in the overlap of mass production and individual choice and taste?

Do things "come into your life with their own energy/soul" history? (Jennifer)

The story about doors with their own perceived emotional provenance that lead to a feeling of being a good fit or carrying a violent and disturbing vibe.

Carrot and Stick politics which weaponize demand (the Stick) in order the change manufacturer behavior. If you don't offer stuff with a positive and transparent provenance then we won't buy your stuff.
