Archetypal Practice - descriptive spectra

To practice an archetypal perspective begins with the following guidelines:

  • Use adjectives, adverbs, and describe rather than reduce phenomena whenever possible.
  • Note doctrinal/monotheistic thinking and complicate/nuance whenever possible.
  • Orient thinking in terms of a spectrum of possible meanings related to a core idea.
  • Use language that fits the style of the core idea being expressed.
  • Avoid absolute, full stop statements when possible, or end absolute statements with "except when not".

Examples

The Mother is an Archetype of goodness and protection.

While partially true, this does not aknowledge the partialty of its truth and can become something like:

"Mother", viewed archtypally, suggests a range of experience all of which is motherly, from the life-giving, sweet, and ultimately comforting, like breast milk, to intimate abuse like the insinuating brutality of control through passive aggression.
