The Practical Life of Conflict
Montessori students are encouraged to put their hands to the making of their inner and outer worlds through Practical Life. They pour, tie, buckle, cut, and mop their way into a range of sensory integrated skills, outer hand work forming practical and intellectual habits that will stand them in good stead through their lives. Most curricula do not afford children or adults this advantage, of learning the process whole and embedded in reality, when it comes to embracing difference and working through conflict. Children are most often told by adults how to behave rather than given a lesson. This deprives everyone involved of the opportunity to learn Conflict Done Well by discovering and practicing the physical, intellectual, and emotional development of integrated conflict skills. During an upcoming Community Information Night at
Pacific Rim International School in Emeryville, CA, Montessori Child-grown-up and PRIntS father, Brandon Williamscraig Ph.D., will offer an orientation to his Martial Nonviolence system and Peace Practices curriculum for Montessori environments. This approach combines aikido, theater, and facilitation skills, and you will take away from this evening specific strategies for working with your child, spouse, and other adults. Please come.
