The Brandonflower blooms in September
the time when heat dies down
and ripening is happening,
happening is ripening.
It shoots straight up from the ground,
sudden, in its own season,
commanding color, curving petals, crowned
with a complex of stamen,
a delicate poof with trailing parts going down,
complete in itself –
a startling production of the lifeforce underground.
Later come the leaves.
