On Sunday, May 18th, we began our exploration of:

How Change Works

I'm facilitating a bit more, asking that we notice how much "airtime" we use and finding a good balance. Ondine Young joined us for the first time and we hope will do so again for some time to come.

I've just begun teaching Peace Practices classes this week, and am still in production/start-up mode, so my energy is less than usual. Please be patient with me and add any energy of your own you feel you can. I have a wonderful new assistant, named Cheyenne Barr, who may cross your path in the process of being helpful. I have bcc'd her on this email so she knows she is being discussed :-) and will include her in this email group if she decides to join us at some point.

The category of potential discussion topic we discussed for the meeting was very much like the following:

    How Does Change Work?
    Subcategories of inquiry:
"Conservative" ("Traditional") vs "Liberal" ("Progressive") "mind"
    archetypal roles and temperament
Win-Lose Arguments often feeling like obfuscation and dialogue feeling mutually educative
question to ask--What change is feared?
How to change a/my mind? Good people have bad habits of thought and action. What are mine?
    individualism
    making a religion of change
    communication styles
projective (you always) vs first person speech (I feel/think/wonder)
going first (to change a feeling/sense)

It is my understanding that we will continue working on "How Change Works" until we feel we have adequately surveyed that topic, and next time each of us will present the book or articles that we each proposed...

- Ondine: Pema Chodron When Things Fall Apart

- Martin: Dubner & Levitt Think Like A Freak (from the authors of Freakanomics)

- Brandon: George Lakoff Moral Politics

I have been collecting additional relevant resources at George Lakoff. Please check it out and let me know if you find it useful and how that collection may be improved.

- Laurent: the articles above

- Michael, given the topic, what do you already have access to and some familiarity with that you might tell us about next time?

- Daemeon: not sure if he will be around next time.

Quick Welcome/Framing:

What are we doing here?

  1. Study Soul Together
  2. Look for Meaning
  3. Read Some Writings
  4. Invite Guests
  5. Maybe Do Some of Our Own Writing and Teaching about What We Learn
  6. Salon – Idea-Chewing – The Village Is Dead and Now We Must Choose to Learn Together. Do we need an artistic practice to find a YOU?

Change Possibility Models

  1. win/lose argumentative model
  2. agree to disagree model
  3. dialogue and mutually educative model
  4. progressive model
  5. how have I changed my mind in the past? model
  6. religion determines if change is good or bad model
  7. who gets to say what’s real? model
  8. training vs. education model
  9. knowledge vs. wisdom model

So, let’s look at:

How Have I Changed My Mind in the Past?

1. Ondine – Tewkesbury Social Initiative Cooperative and Police Chases into the Ditch

2. Laurent – scarcity of clients caused change of work focus

3. Damion – change style so I can function as a learner not an innovator

4. Martin – hockey -- % vs. macho – push change and look cool if it works or get a sure shot? What’s really at risk? Push change or Pull change? Is Push Choice past-related? Is Pull change future-related? Who bets on these?

5. Amateurism – Doing something for the love of it?

6. Complex Systems – like Aikido, you manage with a push and a pull

7. Ondine – Music freelancer

8. Anger is the push, justice is the pull.

9. If you feel a push, look for a pull.

10. Keep your balance by moving backwards and projecting forward.

11. Never stop moving, just keep adjusting.

12. To try to keep doing the same thing without changing is crazy!

13. Dynamic perspective!

14. Conflict is a great opportunity for learning and growth.

15. Does fear and scarcity drive change?

16. Do we go back to village models? Home-schooling?

17. How do the poor, the voiceless, the marginalized manage push – pull?

18. Audio-visuals give us a push or a pull – a picture worth a 1000 words – refounding ATT with a steamroller going over all of their trophy history.

19. A personal relationship can give us a push or a pull.

20. Rate of fraud vs. Fear of Fraud – living in Specter of Fraud vs. Actual Fraud

21. What is the impetus for change?

22. What can we do to identify/name our options?
