Christ is a candle in the desert
standing in the sand and heat
an entirely different order of things
from the cactus, rocks, little flowers and
occasional scorpions.
In the lonliness and silence
Christ glows with spiritual fire
curiously attractive during the day
Ah! but in the night!
a light to be seen from any roadway,
orientation to all stumbling wanderers,
seen for miles and miles of dry, empty landscapes
or from any passing airplane—
a quickener of breath, a star on the ground.
