If the tetragrammaton (from Greek τετραγράμματον, meaning "(consisting of) four letters") is the Hebrew theonym יהוה commonly transliterated into Latin letters as YHWH, and one of the names of the national God of the Israelites used in the Hebrew Bible (Wikipedia), then is tetragrammatonium the core imaginary element from which the Judeo-Christian belief system is constructed?
Beautiful, Jamie Sensei.
A true and worthy tribute to a truly worthy man.
Love,
Brandon

There are no classes this week. Classes will resume in the new year on January 5th (Monday). Happy Holidays!
Last week we called on our community to help us grow Peace Practices into its second year of teaching "conflict done well" locally, nationally, and then internationally. The international foundation providing our launch funding has given us a challenge and is ready to match your donations. We are also offering gifts to those that support us at different levels of financial contribution. Read about it here.

From Cheyenne,
“Taking responsibility does not mean that we deny the reality of institutionalized injustice. For example, racism, sexism, and homophobia all create barriers and concrete incidents of discrimination. Simply taking responsibility does not mean that we can prevent discriminatory acts from happening. But we can choose how we respond to acts of injustice.
Taking responsibility means that in the face of barriers we still have the capacity to invent our lives, to shape our destinies in ways that maximize our well-being.”
-bell hooks, All About Love
I would add one phrase to get at the need for Peace Practices: "But we can choose how we [prepare ourselves and our children] to respond to acts of injustice."
Appreciating my spouse.
Tan graduated from our alma mater, the University of Dallas, and knows the difference between evidence (all of which makes ridiculous the trope that there is some link between homosexual marriage and the legalization of other "marriages" which would result in incest or pedophilia) and expediency, whether toward re-election or going along to get along in his caucus. Politicians live in an unreal world of addiction to ideology and deal-making. If the people who know them don't speak to them directly, call them back to the world beyond the Capitol, politicians lose track of what they know to be true beneath and beyond their own perceived interests. Go tell him.
- Brandon
Ugh. 63 Texas legislators have signed an amicus brief with the US 5th Circuit Court of Appeals stating that legalizing same-sex marriage will lead to the legalization of incest and pedophilia. One of the names on the list is University of Dallas alumnus Tan Parker. I feel embarrassed for Tan, and for the University. Tan, object on religious grounds if your principles demand it. Object on the basis of "it just makes me uncomfortable" if you must. But be forthright about it. Signing this brief belies your intelligence and makes you look like a puppet.
Thanks to all of you who came to the seminar with Ikeda Sensei at Aikido of Berkeley! It was particularly fine training with opportunities to apply his way of understanding the martial body to many of different attacks and techniques. Aikido practitioners from all over the Bay Area showed up, which made for great community building, and the diversity of experience and opportunities for feeling different habits of movement made this seminar extremely rich.

On Sunday, April 13th, at 5pm we explored:
(originally framed as "Health and Advertising," but that is not precisely what we talked about)
How are these related?
Flu, Public Health, Media, Advertising, messaging, For Profit Health Insurance Companies, "Single Payer", Who Gets Paid?, more...
Nobody specifically provided resources for this topic before the session, so each member is asked to email (if possible) or bring in examples of articles which illustrate their concerns and discoveries. This will be our model until we decide otherwise.
Some examples of my suggested materials are below.
